If you think you may have genital herpes, you need to see your GP, sexual health clinic or other health care provider. Sexual health clinics provide a specialist, confidential, free or low-cost service.

Pharmacies
Some pharmacies can now prescribe valaciclovir without patients having to attend a medical centre. This means people with known/recurrent herpes can have medication on hand and can start treatment at the first hint of symptoms. It is not designed to be a diagnosis and assessment service or for treatment for an acute episode of herpes.
We recommend the following steps to check when the credentialled pharmacist is rostered to work:
- Call the pharmacy in advance
- Select the dispensary option (rather than the main retail line)
- Ask specifically about the “Early Care Recurrent Herpes Service”
